Being a New Yorker, it's almost impossible to imagine there's a unique dining experience out there that could wow us for its originality. So when I was invited to the Chef's Social Club event at the Pierre Hotel for "A Gastronomic Exploration of Teas with Palais des Thes," I didn't know what to expect. I knew I'd enjoy it since I'm passionate about my daily cup, but I had no idea the experience would leave me so intrigued, curious and fascinated by the world of teas.
From the moment we stepped into the iconic Rotunda Room, the stunningly palatial dining room at the heart of the Pierre Hotel, there was no doubt that we were in for special, one-of-a-kind experience. The 5-course tasting menu took us on a journey around the globe, featuring teas from China and Japan, served at different temperatures, infused in cocktails and prepared in some of the dishes.
Our hosts, Palais des Thes President, Aurelie Bessiere along with Perrine Executive Chef, Ashfer Biju, introduced each dish with a history on the tea and an explanation for the dish paired with it.
Choosing a favorite tea would be like having to choose a favorite child. Each tea was so unique upon first sip, and changed as you paired it with the accompanying dish. That being said, one of my favorite teas was one made by Chef Biju, which was a seductively sweet green tomato tea with an adorable handmade tea bag bearing the name "T-Tea."
As I mentioned earlier, this was by far one of the most unique, luxurious and precious dining experiences I've had in NYC. The attention to detail, our passionate hosts who truly enjoyed educating us, the opulence of the Rotunda Room, the sensuous teas and the thoughtfully prepared dishes all came together in a moment I will not soon forget. For that reason I look forward to the next Chef's Social Club event, and you should, too!
Special thanks to the kitchen for preparing a vegetarian option for me at the last minute!
